See Canada’s Snowbirds in Action
The Snowbirds will be practising at the Comox Airbase from April 19th daily until May 11th. We have permission (i.e. be admitted) to the Air Force Beach view site on Sunday, May 1st (thanks to Kurt Luneberg for arranging the permission). The training flight time windows are 09:30-10:30 and 13:30-14:30. The plan, if the weather is good, is to attend the first practice window. If the early weather is shaky we will depart later for the second practice window, assuming an improving forecast.
In order to minimize traffic interference, we will drive the most direct route from Qualicum Beach, then Courtenay, Ryan Road, left onto Little River Rd, right onto Kilmorley Rd and keep right to Air Force Beach (northwest end of the runway). At the restricted entrance to the beach area (which is on base property), we will be met, and guided to the best viewing location.
The default start time is for the first window. Please RSVP to me garthclare@shaw.ca if you plan to attend, so I can update you if we have to delay for the second window. Also indicate if you will attend lunch at the Griffin, so I can reserve suitable seating (state number in your car).
We will drive in convoy, please keep the preceding car in sight, but leave sufficient room for overtaking vehicles to pull in between.
Date: Sunday, May 1st
Departure time (first window):
– Informal starting location: Tim Hortons, Woodgrove Centre, Nanaimo: leave in good time to meet prime start at Qualicum Beach, follow your own route
– 3 Poles, Qualicum Beach waterfront (Hwy 19A): 08:00
– Buckley Bay rest layby: a brief pit stop for those that need to ‘stretch legs’
After the event, for those that wish sustenance, we will gather at the Griffin Pub. Make own way home.
