Rare 1960 Vauxhall Cresta PA for sale in Calgary, Alberta.
This lovely and uncommon little car was bought new by my grandparents in 1960. It was purchased from Jenner Motors of Edmonton, Alberta. It was kept in my grandparent’s garage for many years and rarely driven, as a result it has amazingly low mileage – 42,954 miles! Sadly, after my grandparents died, it was kept outside at a relative’s house, and has had a rough go of it in the last 15 years. I acquired it in 2021 after my dad died and was hoping to restore her, but unfortunately, I have had to acknowledge that I simply don’t have the time, space or money to do her justice.
Only 81,841 of these cars were made between 1957 and 1962, and this one is especially unusual in that it was manufactured specifically for the North American market, and is a left-hand drive. There are a few right-hand drive examples in the UK, but I have been trying to find one like this in North America for the past six years, without success. So if you are looking for a sweet little almost-one-of-a-kind car, this is for you!
The other unusual aspect of this car that it has a ‘reverse-polarity’ battery, also known as a Positive Ground System. This was done in many British vehicles built in the 1950s and 60s as manufacturers believed it would prevent corrosion and rusting. It seems to have worked, as the car has surprisingly little rust for its age.
At some point in the past, my dad discovered that the fuel tank was leaking. He emptied it and ran the car out of a jerry can. When I got the car, I removed the tank and had it sandblasted to determine where the issues were. There are some micro-holes in it, so it may not be ‘restorable’, but I kept the tank and the car still runs (beautifully!) out of the jerry can. Despite this, the car has not moved in a while and would need to be transported to her new home on a flatbed trailer.
Overall, this pretty little car wouldn’t require much work to get her running and roadworthy.
She would be an ideal project for someone who loves British cars and wants what no one else has.
