Austin 10/4 Colwyn Cabriolet

1951 Austin A40
(Two really neat photos)

Greetings:
Attached is a picture taken in Chilliwack, BC in 1948. The car was our family car, an Austin 10/4 Colwyn Cabriolet. I was under the impression it was a 1936. We lived in Vancouver, and my father's parents lived in Chilliwack (Sardis) on a 10 acre dairy and berry farm.
This picture was taken under a big tree by their house .. that's my brother ( 3 1/2), myself (5) and my Mother telling us to sit still and smile.   There were 3 kids and my parents, and we used to drive out to Chilliwack every weekend for a year in that little car. We later got a 1936 Willys and that was much more comfortable and easier to see out the windows.

The second picture is myself and my first car, a 1951 Austin A40. That picture was taken on my High School Grad night (Vancouver Tech) in 1961. The car had been backed into by a schoolmate, so I had bought a new hood but it was black. I had wished the whole car was black because there were way too many green Austin’s around.

(Webmaster note: The Austin 10/4 Colwyn Cabriolet: was built from 1934 to 1936, and had an 1125cc side valve engine with a top speed of 55 mph, with a fuel rating of 35 mpg)

1953 Austin Somerset - bought from Gordon Sales

A 'fond memories' story

Good folk,

I came across your website while surfing, and I was delighted to read the remembrance of Gordon Brothers at Alma and W. 10th.

I bought a 1953 Austin Somerset from the "sales" Gordon in the mid-60's for $200. My first car, a 1950 A-40 had been called Sammy, because we wondered "What makes Sammy Run?". Thus the second car became Sammy Two.

My wife and I had our honeymoon in Sammy Two in 1966; fan belt broke on the way from Coquitlam to Harrison Hot Springs.

Many fond memories of the Austins I've owned and ridden in. Memories like Dad trying to teach Mom to drive while my sister and I cowered and prayed in the back seat. Dad said, "Turn Right at the next corner". Mom did. Dad said, "Pull over to the side of the road and stop the car." He said it very calmly, and then asked why Mother hadn't slowed down to take the corner. "You didn't tell me to", was her reply. She had lifted the inner wheels up careening around the corner in Burnaby.

My 1951 A-40 sits in the workshop patiently awaiting my time and limited skill to be mobile again. Her name is Taishus, which I think is appropriate.

Cheers and thanks again,

Doug. Sowden
